On coordinates: landfall positions, wind, and pressure are the official NOAA HURDAT2 best-track values at each landfall — precise to the record, not approximated. Location labels are simplified to states (U.S.) or countries/territories (Full Atlantic Basin mode) using coastal boundary regions I built by hand from HURDAT2's lat/lon, since HURDAT2 itself doesn't carry that detail; small, closely-packed islands in the Lesser Antilles carry more uncertainty than isolated coastlines. Most landfalls here are explicitly flagged as such by HURDAT2 itself. A smaller set (marked "inferred" in the tooltip) come from a supplementary pass: storms with documented real-world damage or deaths that HURDAT2 never flagged as making landfall at all (confirmed cases include Hurricane David 1979 — 2,078 deaths — and Hurricane Fifi 1974 — over 8,000 deaths in Honduras) were checked against a real coastline dataset to recover their true landfall point and intensity.
On damage/fatalities: narrative figures come from a historical list of Atlantic tropical cyclones the user supplied, cross-referenced by storm name and year, supplemented by NOAA NHC Tropical Cyclone Reports where the CSV had no entry. Figures are as originally reported, not inflation-adjusted, and some early/minor storms remain "Not well documented" where no source had reliable numbers.
On ENSO phase: classifications are NOAA's Oceanic Niño Index (ONI), based on each hurricane season's Aug–Oct SST anomaly. Reliable ONI data only goes back to 1950, so years before that are labeled "Unknown" rather than guessed.
On landfall time: HURDAT2 records every time in UTC. The tooltip converts this to the local standard time zone of the landfall location (e.g. Eastern, Central, Atlantic) based on where it made landfall — it does not apply daylight saving time, since DST rules have changed repeatedly over 174 years and didn't exist at all for most of this record. The UTC time is also shown alongside it for reference.
On damage/deaths: figures are contemporaneous (not inflation‑adjusted) unless noted, compiled from NOAA/NHC historical reports where a match was found; some HURDAT2-confirmed landfalls have no linked impact record and are shown as such rather than guessed.
